Europe 2012- Day 23: Deltaworks in Zeeland

Sunday we slept in a little so Nate would have some energy. Our goal for the day was to try find Deltaworks which is a system of dikes and dams that keep Holland from flooding. In January 31, 1953 There was a major storm that caused the North Sea to flood. With combinations of the storm tide and tidal surges the water level rose 18.4 ft above sea level.  The existing dikes could not handle the load and massive flooding followed killing over 1800 in Holland alone, most which were in the Zeeland province.

I thought this little truck was cute

When we arrived to the town of Ouddorp we tried to find the beach. We were able to see the ocean but we didn’t have a clear path down to the Ocean. As it was getting close to 1 we decided to find some lunch. After driving around we decided on a fast food place. I had a less than real hamburger that was barely edible.

We found some kind of obstacle course

When we had arrived at the restaurant I wanted to put my camera in the trunk but it seemed stuck so we decided we would try again later. After lunch we tried opening it again but it seems to be broken. There is no button on the key fab or in the car that we have been able to find, just the button on the back of the trunk. You can hear a clicking sound but nothing happens . . . how annoying.

After driving around a bit we finally found a place to go down to the beach. It was very windy and the beach was very deep so it took a while to walk down to the water, and by the time we got there we were ready to turn around. One cool thing we saw there were people riding around in kite cars (called 'blow karts'), not something I’ve ever seen or heard of at home.

I found myself a car

There must have been some kind of crabs making these little sand poops

As we headed back towards Eindhoven I looked in the GPS and saw that there was a Deltaworks only 17km away, so we detoured there first. We didn’t really have time to tour anything but we were impressed at the massive size and length of it. The wind was blowing incredibly hard as we walked outside trying to look at the Dam.

City gate we passed while driving home

This bridge was miles long, it took several minutes to cross.

Traffic  :(

On the drive home we hit some nasty traffic as the freeway was closed due to construction. After about 30 minutes of detouring, we had another successful end to a weekend.
