Every Tuesday in Eindhoven there is an open market in the
centrum (city center). Since Dave and Kristie were gone the previous week I wanted to make
sure they were able to see it, since it’s not a typical thing in the US.
It was raining when we woke up, but not hard enough to keep
us away. Today there were lots of vendors selling clothes, fruit and veggies. And material; lots, and lots of material. I’ve never bought anything at a
market before but today I found a cute top for only 10 euros, so I bought it.
We also found a stand
that was making fresh Stroopwafels. Stroopwafels are Dutch cookies with caramel. To make them they take dough and
press it between a waffle iron for a minute or so. Then they are taken off and
cut open to make 2 halves. They spread one side with a caramel-like syrup and
then put the 2 sides back together, and set aside to cool. The guy told me that
they are the best when they are only 2 minutes old. I would have to say I
agree.

Here you can see the dough pieces and the press that cooks it. |
Stroopwafels were first made in the city of Gouda back in
1784. In the 19th century there were 100 bakers in Gouda that made
them. Gouda was the only city that made them until 1870, when they started
spreading throughout the country.
I decided to buy some fresh oranges from a stand, since they
looked so good. I figured it they weren’t the best I would just press them into
juice, since we have a juicer in the apartment.
